A Parent’s Guide to Safe Browser Gaming

Simple steps parents can use to make online game time safer, calmer and more predictable.

A Parent’s Guide to Safe Browser Gaming

Start by playing a new game with your child. Check the theme, instructions, advertising and any external links. Explain that advertisements are separate from the game and that children should ask before opening another website, downloading a file or buying anything.

Children should never share a real name, school, address, phone number, password or precise location in a game or comment. Use a strong, unique password for every account, turn on additional security when available, and sign out on shared devices.

Keep browsers and operating systems updated because updates include important security fixes. A browser game normally runs on the page; an unexpected request to install an unknown program should be treated with caution and discussed with an adult.

Set clear expectations for play time and breaks before a session begins. A timer and a five-minute warning can prevent arguments, while using devices in a shared family area makes supervision feel natural rather than intrusive.

Stay curious instead of only policing. Ask which games the child enjoys and why, learn the basic controls, and create rules together. If content looks broken or inappropriate, close it, record the game title and report it to the website.
